2009 Bellwether Award Winner

Cleveland State Community College – Cleveland, TN: New Math: The Impact of Course Redesign on Learning and Scheduling — In 2008, the Cleveland State math department undertook a course redesign project involving developmental and college-level math courses. In addition to having very positive effects on student learning and engagement, the project has changed the department’s approach to enrollment and schedules. Ramifications in instruction and enrollment will be discussed.

2009 Bellwether Award Winner

Rio Hondo College – Whittier, CA: Providing Ways and Means for Students to “GO RIO” — “GO RIO” is a universal access, mass-transit program that has been offered for all students who are registered full-time at Rio Hondo College. Through an agreement with five local transit agencies, fulltime students can obtain a pass that provides full access seven days a week throughout the entire semester.

Linn-Benton Community College – Albany, OR: Going the Distance: Taking a Diagnostic Imaging Program to Frontier — The “Grow Your Own” Diagnostic Imaging Program is a public/private collaborative venture involving the efforts of an array of community colleges, employers, workforce, and educational partners throughout Oregon. This statewide Community College Partnership Program delivers Imaging education to Oregon’s rural communities where the demand for qualified Radiological Technologists is unmet.

Community College of Baltimore County – Baltimore, MD: High Impact Assessment: Implementing Changes to Improve Student Learning — Assessment at CCBC involves asking the right questions and using data to determine what changes should be implemented to enhance student learning. Guided by a five-stage design, CCBC’s assessment program is faculty-driven, risk-free, and externally validated. Curricular and pedagogical changes have resulted in evidence-based learning improvements that benefit everyone.

Brookdale Community College – Lincroft, NJ: Five-Year Impact Study of the New Jersey Coastal Communiversity — The New Jersey Coastal Communiversity, led by Brookdale Community College, is a six member partnership of colleges and universities that provides increased local access to post-associate degree education. In operation for six years, this presentation discusses nine measures of institutional effectiveness and lessons learned on the development and operation of the state’s first university center.

University of Hawaii-Maui Community College (UH-MCC): “Sink or SLIM”: Sustainability Model — The UH Maui Community College’s Sustainable Living Institute of Maui (SLIM) led a partnership with a major Maui-based agriculture and land development company and two international research universities to develop a model to respond to emerging local and global workforce needs. LaGuardia Community College/City University of New York – Long Island City, NY: First-Year Academies: Facilitating Engagement and Success in the First Year of College — The First Year Academy provides a comprehensive first-year experience for students focused around their chosen discipline areas. Placing all freshmen into one of three Academies based on choice of major, the Program contextualizes basic skills instruction through discipline-based learning communities. Other key aspects include ePortfolio development and discipline-focused, co-curricular activities.

Austin Community College – Austin, TX: College Connection: Connecting Possibility to Expectation One Student at a Time — College Connection’s innovative approach, taking admission and enrollment services onto high school campuses, is increasing postsecondary enrollment rates, especially for minority and low-income students. All participating seniors receive an ACC District acceptance letter with their diplomas, resulting in increased college-going rates: 38% at ACC District and 9.8% during the first two years in overall Texas higher education enrollment.

Temple College – Temple, TX: The Central Texas Biotechnology Education-to-Employment Model: The Texas Bioscience Institute — Learn how a community college partnered with a state-supported medical school, a major private teaching hospital, and public and private independent school districts to turn a declining degree into a program of study that enhances medical research and economic development through the development of a state-of-the-art bioscience institute.

Palm Beach Community College – Lake Worth, FL: The Career Pathway Model: Small Steps to Big Leaps (and everything in-between) — Palm Beach Community College realigned its curriculum to allow students to seamlessly progress through career pathways. Students can start in clock-hour based instruction and transfer that learning into credit-based Associate in Science degrees. Along this pathway, students can use exit points to employment with recognized certificates.

Cape Cod Community College – West Barnstable, MA: You Too Can Be Green — Our “green campus” includes energy management (fuel cell, solar, plans for wind); conservation, composting and recycling; environmental technology and renewable energy curricula; student internships; partnerships across education, business, non-profits and government; a new LEED-certified building; and vigorous fundraising (private donors, NSF, business, government). Learn how “green” your campus can be, too.

Meridian Community College – Meridian, MS: Rush Health Systems and Meridian Community College: People Serving People — Meridian Community College and Rush Health Systems are partners in delivering training focused on Rush’s mission statement of hospital-wide commitment to “excellence in service management.” Rush and MCC have delivered customized classes in the following areas: Medical Billing, Leadership Management, computer training, Admissions Clerk and system-wide Customer Service training.

Alabama Southern Community College – Monroeville, AL: Commitment to Student Achievement Through Customized Instruction — The Teaching and Learning Initiative at Alabama Southern is an innovative approach for recreating America’s community colleges by placing an emphasis on student achievement through customized instruction. This program will provide an Initiative overview, demonstrate Smart Board technology, provide how-to assistance, and end with a question and answer segment.

Arkansas Northeastern Colleges – Burdette, AR: Steel Industry Technology Degree Meets Industry Demands — Arkansas Northeastern College developed a degree program for steel industry employees. The Solutions Group, the customized training division of ANC, created an industry relevant program that meets the students’ schedules and is a source of revenue. By sharing this program design, ANC demonstrates the power of teamwork and FLEXIBILITY!.

Minneapolis Community and Technical College – Minneapolis, MN: The Health Careers Partnership – A Model of Workforce Development in Healthcare — The Health Careers Collaboration is one of the nation’s largest and most successful hospital-based workforce development programs. Since 2000, our College has enrolled nearly 1,000 students into education programs for high- vacancy health care jobs-with partner hospitals guaranteeing jobs for graduates. This partnership is a powerful economic tool, providing economic stability to Minnesota’s most economically-challenged urban neighborhood, through a market-driven approach to workforce training and education.

Blue Ridge Community College – NC: Learning Together: A Family Centered Literacy Program — The Family Centered Literacy Program is a multi-agency educational collaboration serving Western North Carolina’s rapidly growing Latino population. The program’s objective is to enhance English language and social skills for Latinos of all ages in a friendly environment, so that participants may advance and obtain a GED diploma.

Seminole Community College – FL: “They Joined the Team to Build the Dream”– A $5 Million Center for Building Construction — In order to provide state-of-art, workplace-simulated labs for apprenticeship students at Seminole Community College, more than 90 industry partners donated $2.5million of the required apprenticeship delivery system, the exemplary college/industry partnership and the events leading to building completion.

Springfield Technical and Community College – MA: Creative Use of Real Estate: Converting a Derelict Factory into an Economic Development Engine — A small urban college purchased a 500,000-square-foot derelict factory adjacent to its campus in 1996. Within six years, the facility, known as the STCC Technology Park, had created over 2,000 local jobs, incubated dozens of new business, contributed $250,000 annually in City taxes and provided $300,000 annually to support College programs.

eTech College of Wisconsin – Wisconsin: Successes of the eTech College of Wisconsin — The eTech College of Wisconsin provides students-those currently enrolled in programs, those wishing to begin a program, or those just interested in one or few specific courses-another option and greater access to education. The campus offers flexible entry to high quality learning experiences and reduces the barriers of time and place. Creativity and innovation are the cornerstones of this dynamic delivery channel. The collaborative development and ongoing administration of the eTech College of Wisconsin creates new efficiencies for all technical colleges through standardized course competencies, share curriculum, joint marketing, and cost effectiveness.

Hartnell College – CA: Fostering Success Among Traditionally Underrepresented Student Groups: Hartnell College’s Approach to Implementation of the Math Science and Engineering Achievement (MESA) Program — To improve student performance for educationally disadvantaged and traditionally underrepresented student groups in technical fileds, Hartnell College has implemented an innovative version of the Mathematics, Engineering, and Science Achievement (MESA) program. Beyond standard services (academic, counseling, etc…), the college leveraged resources linking MESA to student support and outreach programs.

Gateway Technical College – Winsconsin: LINKing the College with Workforce Development: The S.C. Johnson Story — The focus of Gateway Technical College’s presentation demonstrates our on-going workforce development partnership with S.C. John’s “LINK” program. Five years ago, they approached Gateway with a need to further strengthen their incumbent workforce’s technical training and education. Our challenge was to cooperatively create a program that met their training needs and afforded flexibility and timeliness.

Inver Hills Community College – Minnesota: Making Assessment the Heart of Learning — IHCC’s LS/PS program measures student mastery of ten across-the-curriculum skills and records their achievement in a student accessible web-based database. This is a faculty development program focused on assignment design and cross-disciplinary collaboration. Participants will learn how this program and its electronic data-base works and how faculty build assessment of skills into course and assignment design.

North Dakota State College of Science – ND: Transforming A State’s Higher Educational System to Enhance Economic Viability and Quality of Life: A Model Steeped in the Roughrider Tradition — The North Dakota legislature assembled sixty leaders from government, education and business community to rethink the role of higher education in North Dakota. With these results, the Board of Higher Education has set the direction for all state higher education institutions creating a joint vision/plan for the future.

Bristol Community College – MA: Women in Technology Project: Work-Based Learning Expanding in Leaps and Bounds — In order to address growing concerns that few young women enter the fields of higher technology manufacturing and engineering, the Bristol Community College program, Women in Technology was developed to connect high school women with many fields of engineering by paying particular attention to addressing workforce issues and gender differences that permeate educational and corporate cultures. The goal of this project is to identify and address these barriers by providing a seamless connection between secondary and postsecondary engineering curriculum and providing direct work experience in high tech manufacturing.

Collin County Community College – TX: Engaged Scholarship: Collaboration for Excellence in a Media Society — The engaged scholarship activity at Collin County Community College will be presented as a model for collaboration between nationally recognized academic programs. Learning Communities and Service Learning programs have joined together to promote civic engagement and leadership in students. Data will be presented reflecting increased student retention and success and an increased climate of open communication and objectivity, practical experience in community organizations, and deeper understanding of democratic ideals.

Richard J. Daley College – Chicago, IL: Technology and Grease: A Formula for Edutainment and Efficiency — Joint Planning by Daley College with a high school and industry has produced a state-award winning technology-based partnership that motivates students and avoids additional construction. Results: an 84% graduation rate, 32 graduates with a year of college, six students among the top 100 Hispanic graduates in the nation.

Colorado Electronic Community College – CO: Colorado Electronic Community College: College On-line — Anywhere, anytime delivery of products and services has become a mandate for all service sector industries. How can community colleges afford to deliver quality distance education while preserving their hallmark of learner-centered, reasonably-priced, accessible education? Colorado Community Colleges have developed unique public/private partnerships and internal consortia agreements to create Colorado Community College Online, a system of Internet delivered degrees that has become financially self-sustaining after only 9 months of operation.
